Italian Halloween 2014 ! Dia das Bruxas na Itália !

Believe it or not, Halloween – the traditional spooky day of costumes, fright and eating too much candy – is starting to catch here in Italy. Halloween falls just before two important religious holidays in Italy that come at the beginning of November. The first day of the month is Ognissanti or Tutti i Santi  – called All Saint’s Day in English – and is a day dedicated to honoring all the saints and martyr who have died for the Catholic faith. In Italy, Ognissanti is a national holiday, and you’ll actually find most business closed.

The following day, November 2nd, is called Il Giorno dei Morti or, as is often the case in Italy, simply “Tutti i Morti. (In America it’s called All Souls’ Day). It is a day dedicates to remembering all of our loved ones who have passed away.

These days, many have the feeling that Halloween has become more popular, specially among the younger generations, than Italy’s very own Carnevale, those two weeks right before Lent when Italians get crazy about dressing up and playing tricks on their friends.

The search term “Halloween” comes up more often on Italian online searches than “Carnevale” !

Are Italians all becoming Halloween fanatics ???
